4 Myths of the Diabetes Diet

Myth 1: You will no longer be able to eat normal meals.

Many people believe that after you are diagnosed with diabetes, you need that you follow a special diabetic mealplan as a way to stay healthy. But this may not be really true. Diabetics can still enjoy, and eat normal meals, as long while they practice the right balance and small amounts. They can even enjoy eating a common foods, provided they are mindful of their limits in order to avoid disrupting their blood glucose levels.

Myth 2: Diabetics should avoid sugar entirely.

It is not necessarily true that you can no longer get pleasure from eating sweets now that you have diabetes. Although sugar can affect blood glucose in diabetics, that does not mean that you have to shy away from sweets, rather than enjoy sweet treats now and then. The key to enjoying the sporadic sweets is being mindful of moderation.

Myth 3: Diabetics must follow a high-protein meal plan.

Since diabetes is so often associated with carbohydrate consumption, and counting, many people believe that a high-protein diet is the ideal solution. But studies have established that a diet too high in protein can cause insulin resistance, a key factor of diabetes. Yet again, the key is portion control in order to maintain a healthy diabetic diet.

Myth 4: Diabetics must avoid all carbohydrates

When you are afflicted with diabetes, a balanced diet is obviously the most important part, certainly not avoidance of particular food groups such as pastas, breads, or sweets. A newly diagnosed diabetic may still carbohydrates. The most important thing is following the proper serving size and form of carbohydrates that one consumes. Eating whole grain carbohydrates can be a good source of fiber and fiber does and important job of helping blood glucose remain steady.
